Cognitive Frailty Interdisciplinary Network Webinar: Working Alongside Older People in Research

November 5, 2024

Date: 1-3 pm on 22 November 2024

CFIN is pleased to invite you to a webinar exploring how to integrate Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) into your research, and also to involve lay older adults as co-researchers. As there is increasing emphasis on the inclusion of PPI and co-research in research, understanding effective strategies for recruiting lay people and integrating them at various stages of the research (from research design to implementation) is essential. Join the panel of experts to explore:

  • The Importance of PPI in Research: why involving patients and the public enhances the relevance and quality of research, ensuring that studies address real-world needs and concerns.
  • Best Practices for Recruiting PPI Contributors: how to effectively engage diverse communities and ensure inclusive participation.
  • Collaborating with Lay People as Co-Researchers: how to empower lay individuals in the research process, allowing them to bring unique perspectives that can shape study design and implementation.
  • Case Studies and Success Stories: Hear from researchers who have successfully integrated PPI and co-research into their projects, demonstrating the positive impact on research outcomes and community

Speakers

  • Chair: Carol Holland, CFIN Network PI and Professor in Ageing, Lancaster University
  • Dr Caroline Swarbrick, Senior Lecturer in Ageing, Lancaster University
  • Lauren Chaffey, Engagement Co-ordinator at Voice
  • Lay members who have been involved in research in different ways

Dr Caroline Swarbrick: Working alongside people living with dementia as co-researchers

I am a Social Scientist by background and have worked alongside people living with dementia in research for the last 21 years. My work incorporates different approaches to action research, which comprise collaborative and participatory designs. I also use a range of creative methods to ensure inclusivity remains at the heart of research. This presentation focuses on a co-operative inquiry undertaken alongside Open Doors, which is a support group for people living with dementia and care partners. Together, we produced an animation, which is the result of a single question: ‘what does the term neighbourhood mean to you’. Within this presentation, I will share the journey from the conception of the idea, to the animation itself.

Lauren Chaffey:

I have over 4 years’ experience of working in PPIE and Community Development. For 2 and half years I worked at a VCSE organisation called Involve North East that specialised in PPIE, working with communities in Newcastle and Gateshead to better healthcare services across the area. More recently I worked at Northumberland County Council as a Community Development Worker ensuring that the views and experiences of children, young people and their parents shaped the development of Family Hubs in west Northumberland. I am now the Coordinator at Voice, an organisation that specialises in involving the public in research. I manage the day-to-day coordination of Voice activities which includes supporting our Voice member network to get involved in research, as well as supporting researchers to involve the public in their research in a meaningful way.

The webinar will include an interactive session, where participants are welcome to share their past experience working with PPI as well as their experience of being involved in research as a lay participant.

Whether you are a researcher new to integrating PPI or co-research, or looking to enhance your existing practices and learn about how to include lay co-researchers, this webinar promises valuable insights for all. The webinar is also open to lay people who are interested in being involved with research.

The webinar is free to attend for CFIN Members.
